Men’s Sober Living
Men’s sober living homes are gender specific, transitional living facilities for men who are either coming out of a drug and alcohol treatment program and need the after treatment support these facilities offer, or they have returned to sobriety, and believe they have become vulnerable to a relapse and need some additional support. In either event, sober living homes provide structure, support and opportunity for people in recovery from addiction, and an opportunity to move forward with their recovery program. The distinguishing feature of a sober living home is its expectation that residents must re-connect with society.
What to expect out of a sober living home for men
In a sober living home, residents live a support group of peers undergoing the same transition. This male only environment enables emotions, anger, and frustrations to be properly voiced and addressed in a safe and structured environment. Residents learn to cope with day-to-day stresses and aggravations in a sober way, without returning to the substance abuse cycle.
Sobriety, especially after having been involved with substance abuse, requires discipline and guidance. Sober living homes are structured around rules that reinforce discipline and self-reliance. In a sober living home, the following are typical:
- Acceptance by the other residents
- Contributing to the home’s community and maintenance
- Employment, seeking employment, or enrollment in school or training
- Intolerance of theft, violence, harassment, sexual activity, absenteeism, and curfew violations
- No drugs/alcohol
- Paying rent and bills on-time
- Random drug tests
- Required attendance at AA or NA meetings
Benefits of sober living
Sober living facilities for men provide a tremendous service. They help those trying to return to a sober lifestyle find the reassurance they need that they have the skills necessary to move forward. In addition, they are a boon for young men who may still be trying to come to grips with their personal identity and where they may fit in the world at large. This is especially true of men leaving high schools or universities and trying to make their way without having had much training in ‘real world” realities. Through sober living homes, men are able to build personal confidence and self-esteem while at the same time building a support network that empowers them to accept their new sobriety.
